Brain holiday

Roberto’s garden is an interactive web experience with quite a backstory.

It started as a study project to gain some footing in babylon.js, a JavaScript framework that exposes accelerated 3D WebGL graphics to web developers in a post Flash era. With our experience with Flash 3D frameworks such as Papervision, and Away3D, the transition went pretty smooth

The babylon.js syntax is intuitive and suprised us with an awesome spatial sound API. Getting the hassle of WebGL programming out of the way, babylon.js allows us to focus on quickly prototyping and building engaging web experiences that run in both desktop and mobile browsers.

Roberto was a dear friend, and pain relief professor, who lead groundbreaking research in his field.

At a ridiculously young age, he was diagnosed with cancer. During his sickness, he found relief in zooming around in our virtual garden, exploring the sights and sounds that can be found there.

Roberto was fascinated by what web- and VR experiences can do for patients with chronic pain. As opposed to – often addicting – medication, he was investigating the benefits of the ‘brain holiday’ – immersive electronic media and VR experiences that can distract patients from their pain to measurable effect.

We want to dedicate this project to Roberto, and we will continue our efforts in this field, knowing he’ll be watching us over our shoulders.
